(Photographed Above:) Dr. Avery with Kendrick Lamar (not shown) at The Long Beach Art Center in Los Angeles, Ca. Circa 2015. The show, hosted by Cleveland Palmer, celebrated Compton natives positively impacting their community and The Los Angeles community at large.

Aside from teaching art in NYC to elementary and junior high school students, drawing & painting at Phineas Banning High School in Wilmington, Ca, and art courses at various community colleges, Dr. Avery continues her own art trajectory as a creative, focusing in cardboard, found objects, sculptures from nature, painting & drawing, and video editing.

Dance

In 2012, Dr. Avery earned an AFA in Dance from Compton College where she also facilitated art instruction. While attending Compton College, she completed anthropological research in Senegal, West Africa. Soon after, she joined Faithful Central Dance Company in Los Angeles. Subsequently, Dr. Avery began teaching dance privately, as well as to adolescent student populations, in Los Angeles and New York. As a doctoral candidate, Dr. Avery amplified the unwitting silence felt by Black women creatives in her research, through a solo performance during her certification hearing at Columbia University. The audience, restricted from hearing musical accompaniments afforded the dancer, were immersed in quietude experienced by the study's participants while the dancer (Dr. Avery) moved uninhibitedly.

Fashion Design

Admiring her former foster mother's (Mrs. Thelma Marie Griffin of Savannah, Georgia) ability to sew, Dr. Avery re-lit her own passion for designing clothes. During a break from teaching, she secured an MFA in fashion design, specializing in costuming, from The Academy of Art in San Francisco in 2022. Dr. Avery has designed costumes for Adrienne Unae's Universe, sourced costuming for Black & Brown Theater, (Superheros, Luna Vacia), floats for The African American Day Parade, the photo shoot for the Victory art show, and a variety of docu-shorts. Shy of only a few credits, Dr. Avery returns to The Academy of Art to complete an MFA dedicated to knitwear, and will be presenting her clothing line in Fall 2025. Be sure to check back for updates.

Acting

As a professional voice over artist, Dr. Avery's voiced  online  commercials, documentary  (10:33-11:27) segments, and is currently voicing her novel, Beyond the Gate: Your Ride Awaits. Here is one of her voice samples. Affectionately known as Broadway for her animated charisma, she's worked behind the scenes as a stand-in, stunt double, and featured talent. Her first principal role as Dan ended in a failed pilot. In 2024, she and her former student starred in a stage play entitled, "No One Cared." A member of SAG AFTRA & AEA, these experiences sparked her independent peregrination.  Silenced Dialogues, her directing debut, encompasses tvicissitudes of black female body-politics in early America. The title birthed out of Professor Lisa Delpit's academic work in which Dr. Avery co-presented at Teachers College's Re-imagining Education conference in NYC in 2020.
